Apple Intelligence Features Rolled Out in iOS 18.1 Developer Beta
As part of the latest developer beta for iOS 18, Apple has begun rolling out some features from its AI suite, Apple Intelligence. This is an exciting development, as these features were first announced at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) back in June.
However, it’s worth noting that the rollout seems to be quite limited, with only a select group of users able to access the features. According to Apple, users will need to have an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPad or Mac with an M1 chip. Additionally, their device language must be set to U.S. English and their region must also be set to the U.S.
Using Apple Intelligence Features
To use these features, you’ll need to navigate to the Settings app and tap on "Apple Intelligence & Siri" menu. From there, you can join a waitlist for access to the features. You may receive a notification when you’re able to start using them, but it’s worth noting that some features might not be available right away as your device downloads related models.
New Features
So, what exactly are these Apple Intelligence features? Let’s take a closer look:
- Siri Animation: A new animation has been added for Siri, which is sure to enhance the user experience.
- Text Prompts: With iOS 18.1, you can now invoke Siri using text prompts by double-tapping on the bottom bar. This opens up new possibilities for interacting with your device.
- Writing Tools: Apple’s AI suite includes some impressive writing tools that allow you to proofread or rewrite text. You can choose from three tone options: ‘Friendly’, ‘Professional’, and ‘Concise’. These tools also enable you to convert passages into lists, summarize them, format them as tables, or surface key points.
- Mail App Summarization: The Mail app has been updated with a summarization feature that provides one-line summaries for each email without requiring you to open it. This is a huge time-saver and will help you stay organized.
- Focus Mode AI Boost: Focus Mode has received an AI-powered boost, which introduces a new "Reduce Interruptions" mode. This uses AI to only surface essential notifications, ensuring that you can focus on what’s truly important.
What’s Missing
While Apple Intelligence is an exciting development, it’s worth noting that not all features have been rolled out just yet. According to reports from Bloomberg, Apple is still working on bug fixes and other improvements for some of these new features.
Some notable omissions include ChatGPT integration and Image Playground. However, with the latest developer beta, we can expect more features to be added soon.
